MARKING PERIOD ONE CYCLE ESSAY: TFA

OBJECTIVE: Students will know the how colonization affected African tribal civilization in Igbo society. Students will be able to write a 3 page typed essay using 3 quotes, the funnel method and a bibliography page.

DIRECTIONS:
1. Answer one of the following essay question option below.
2. Write your essay using the Funnel Method.
3. You are to use 3 quotes from the book "Things Fall Apart".
4. Each quote must be written in the MLA format located on the website below.

1. Irony: Irony is a difference between appearance and reality. What makes Okonkwo's death an example of Irony?

2. Tragedy: A tragedy is a drama or other work of literature that tells the story of the fall of a person of high status. In what ways is Okonkwo's downfall due to forces entirely beyond his control?

3. Theme: A theme is a central idea in a literary work. What do you think the author of Things Fall Apart wants to teach the world about understanding other cultures?

4. Who does Obierika blame for Okonkwo's death and is he justified in his claim?

MARKING PERIOD TWO BOOK

Parents, thank you all for purchasing Things Fall Apart for the first marking period. We are just about half way through the book and time to prepare for next marking period As we will be approaching the continent of Asia. Students will be reading a great young adult novel by a best selling author, Isabel Allende, called the "Kingdom of the Golden Dragon".

The book can be purchased on www.bn.com or www.amazon.com. The lowest price I have seen so far is at Barns and Noble for 8 dollars.

Okonkwo committed a great evil during the week observed for peace with nature and neighbors by beating his wife Ojiugo. Ezeani said, “…you have committed a great evil…Your wife was at fault, but even if you came into your obi and found her lover on top of her, you would still have committed a great evil to beat her’...The evil you have don can ruin the whole clan. The earth goddess whom you have insulted may refuse to give us her increase, and we shall all perish.”


1. Explain how Ojiugo was at fault and Okonkwo’s reaction was typical of his nature.
